Igus 3D Printing FAQs
Who is Igus? What do they do?
Igus specialises in high performance "motion plastics" products - products made from advanced plastics that enable relative motion of connected parts, like sliders, bearings and pivots - for many industrial applications worldwide. They are an Original Equipment Supplier to most car manufacturers, and you'll find their motion plastic products in most modern cars.
Their 3D Printing Service covers almost the entire spectrum of classic car use cases, from a nodding dog ornament for your parcel shelf to high-performance bearings operating in a hostile environment.
How does this service work?
All you need is a CAD file of your design (Igus can help with that), and the workflow will walk you through the right plastic to use for your application. At the end of the workflow, you place your order and then wait for Igus to do their magic!
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No! They're as happy to do one-offs as they are to do big bulk orders, and everyone is welcome to use this service.
Unsurprisingly, the unit cost decreases as you order larger-quantity production runs, but you can choose what's best for your budget and needs.
Is this service expensive and reserved for classic Ferrari owners?
No. We think this service is remarkably cost effective for the capability Igus provides, and Igus is working hard to keep bringing the cost down too. Unsurprisingly, the price varies considerably according to the size, complexity, material, quantity and precision you require for your application. Material choice has a big influence on the price, because some of their plastics are extremely advanced and capable of serving very demanding motion use cases in hostile environments.
Can I print ornamental objects? Or is this only for hardcore applications?
Yes. You can print ornamental objects using less advanced/more commonly-used plastics used in 3D Printing and we welcome this. Whatever your classic car need, if Igus has a suitable plastic to serve your needs - however modest or demanding - you can use this service. Take a look and see if this service can work for you - and please let us know if you found it useful!
Why is Igus offering this service to the classic car community?
Because they believe that their plastics can serve many classic car maintenance use cases, that their modern plastics can often do the job better than the OEM parts, and that they can help plug the supply gap created by scarcity of OEM or alternative parts. As a longstanding OES of the automobile industry and supplier to most other industries, they are confident that their technology will benefit the classic car community.
I don't have a CAD drawing, can I still use this service?
No, the starting point is a CAD drawing of the object you want printed. There are multiple sources online where you can either procure an off-the-shelf CAD model, or create a model yourself. Many car clubs have a library of CAD models as well, or can help you generate one. We intend to establish a library for users of this service, but that's for another day.
Can I produce copies of OEM parts using this service?
Absolutely not. You are not permitted to use this service to replicate any article that is subject to a third party's intellectual property rights without their explicit permission. By using this service, you declare that you are the intellectual property rights holder of the part(s) being printed and/or you have the explicit permission of the rights holder to reproduce the part(s). Neither Igus nor Vroom Classics takes any responsibility for violation of intellectual property rights by users of this service.
This is called a beta service - what does that mean?
It means that this service is in an early user testing phase and does not have all the "bells and whistles" in terms of functionality, look and feel, usability and slick customer support. So, it looks very un-Vroom Classics-like, is designed for a different audience (e.g. no tailoring for classic car use cases), and you might get frustrated by who to ask for help - Vroom Classics or Igus. But if you like this, please use it and let us know you like it and we'll make it better for you!
What's next for this service on Vroom Classics?
If you tell us that you love and need this service, and we see that you're using it, then Igus and Vroom Classics will be able to invest more in tailoring this service to your specific needs. That includes making the User Interface more "classic car-friendly", tailored/adapted material and production recommendations shrink wrapped around classic car applications, and a library of CAD drawings for you to use (IP violation free, of course). There's a lot we want to do, but everything depends on YOU.
Who should I contact for help with this service?
That depends on what help you seek:
For help with the printing service itself (workflow issues, material questions etc), please contact Marius Brenner at Igus using the contact tool on the User Interface above.
For help with making this service more adapted to classic cars or any other questions surrounding this service, please contact Vroom Classics at contactus@vroomclassics.com.
