“Potential Lost”

This drawing captures Alessandro Nannini, Italy's greatest motor racing hope in a generation, hustling the 1989 Benetton B189 Ford to his only F1 victory at Suzuka before a devastating helicopter crash ended his promising F1 career in a cruel instant.

The Benetton B189 was a peach of an F1 car, and it markedly raised Benetton's performance when it was unleashed in Mexico (round 4 of 1989). Considered one of Rory Byrne's early aerodynamic masterpieces and engineered by Pat Symonds on a shoestring, the car's drivers enjoyed superior stability and traction which made the B189 especially potent in low-grip conditions. Coupled with these traits was the straightline speed afforded by the brand new Ford HB V8, which would go on to be the most successful customer F1 engine in modern F1 history. Nannini exploited this performance to take victory at the rain-soaked Japanese GP in 1989, prior to his career-ending helicopter crash that severed his right arm.

Originally rendered in pencil and pastel by fine artist Mark J Davey, this piece is reproduced using specialist, fine art giclee printing methods.
