Phil Hill and the Ferrari Sharknose, Champions Riding High - Limited Edition Giclee Print
“Champions Riding High”
This drawing captures Phil Hill driving his Ferrari 156 "Sharknose" as reigning World Champion in the 1962 Monaco GP.
Phil Hill was the first American to win the Formula One World Championship, and he remains - incredibly - the only American-born World Champion. The Ferrari 156 that he raced in 1961 and 1962 was only Ferrari's second mid-engined F1 car and was a derivative of the car originally designed for the 1.5 litre F2 category. Conveniently for Ferrari and Hill, the 1961 regulations forced an engine capacity reduction to 1.5 litres, and Ferrari stole a march on its rivals. The lithe, low-slung body and the aerodynamic "sharknose" radiator housing endowed the modestly-powered Ferrari with a championship-winning top speed advantage. Bizarrely, every original 156 was destroyed when the car was retired from competitive service.
